About the Artist

Claire Carew was born in the country of Guyana, South America, of African and European ancestry.

Her experiences with the rituals of shaman healers have helped her discover the lives of her historic ancestors and thereby enliven her art.

The colours and subjects of Claire’s paintings and sculptures continue to evolve and be enriched by her exploration of indigenous cultures which inform the mystery of her creative process.

As a result her work is ethereal, guided by dream interpretations and the wisdom of “the ancient ones.”

Claire feels that her strongest body of work has been completed in México.

This painting was completed of Moises in 1994. I met him in 2005 in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. My first time in San Miguel was in 1996.

As you can see I painted him as a Holy man.

The painting I completely forgot about as I had given it to Dr. Jan Carew in 1994. When I returned to Canada in October 2015 from San Miguel I said to myself I think I painted Moises years ago before meeting him. I asked Jan’s wife. Dr. Joy Carew to look through Jan's property. She found the original painting. Moises' hair in 2018 was at that length. It is him!
